It was in 1976 that my Dad started Phillips Auto Care. Back then it was my responsibility to sweep the floors, dump the trash; you know, the usual boring stuff. Who'd of thought that someday I would be running the business. I know I sure didn't.
Although my dad started this business, I guess it's not really his fault that Phillips guys fix cars for a living, that distinction belongs to my Granddad, Orvil Phillips.
"Pop" as I called him, grew up in a small town in Arkansas (before moving to Oklahoma and meeting my Grandmother) and showed at an early age an aptitude for mechanics, building steam engines and such. During the War, he came out here to work in the Navy shipyards and that is more or less how we wound up on the west coast.
Ask anyone in the automotive business who's been around this area for many years and they are sure to know Orvil Phillips, he's pretty well known for his restorations. From a 1930 Ford Model "A" (which he passed down to me) to the various others sitting in my cousin's garages (we all got a car from Pop), all would agree that he's nearly a mechanical genius.
I guess it's that love of cars that got us into this mess we call the automotive repair business, and I suppose it's what will keep us here for many years to come - 34 years and still counting.
